July Is Hot

Now, I don't want to complain (not much, anyway) about the heat, but, when I go out for the morning paper at 6:00 a.m., the top of the paper is cool from the night-time coolth, and the bottom is hot to the touch from lying on the driveway and absorbing all the stored warmth therein. I don't recall that happening before. Sheesh!

Impossible Dream

This is enough to make a grown man cry. I know I shall never achieve this form, and I'm ready to cry.

Notice the left arm; it's extended back as straight as an arrow.

Notice the two feet; fully flat on the ground.

Notice the back twist; just right.

Sigh.

Vive La Difference

As Rich Galen at Mullings.com says:

"Interesting how the same two words...mean such different things: Head Butt. Butt Head."

Deep-Fried Dinner (Diner?)

We made our first trip to McCovey's Restaurant on Friday evening. It's a great, all-american, family-friendly baseball-themed place. I am thinking of all my out-of-town baseball fans who will love it!

A Really Nice Picture

By one Brandon Pass, from his posted collection on Flickr.

It's a shot from the interior of St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco. The building was designed by Italy's famous engineer Nervi.

(As always, a click on the pic will open it in a new window.)

Golden Oldie [John Derbyshire]

I assume that my erudite co-Cornerites will all know this one, but some readers may not.

Did you hear about the dyslexic insomniac agnostic? He used to lie awake all night wondering if there really was a dog.

[DISCLAIMER: No dyslexics, insomniacs, or agnostics were harmed in the making of this joke.]

Alpha, Beta, . . .

Guess where our word "alphabet" comes from.
Kate Smith Sings...

No date, but I'm guessing sometime after the war, late 1940's or so.
UPDATE Note, however, that the displayed flag has 50 stars, and remember that Hawaii, the 50th State, was admitted in 1959.
UPDATE II I just knew that someone knows a lot more than I. Go to
