Deep-Fried Dinner (Diner?)

We made our first trip to McCovey's Restaurant on Friday evening. It's a great, all-american, family-friendly baseball-themed place. I am thinking of all my out-of-town baseball fans who will love it!

A Really Nice Picture

By one Brandon Pass, from his posted collection on Flickr.

It's a shot from the interior of St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco. The building was designed by Italy's famous engineer Nervi.

(As always, a click on the pic will open it in a new window.)

Golden Oldie [John Derbyshire]

I assume that my erudite co-Cornerites will all know this one, but some readers may not.

Did you hear about the dyslexic insomniac agnostic? He used to lie awake all night wondering if there really was a dog.

[DISCLAIMER: No dyslexics, insomniacs, or agnostics were harmed in the making of this joke.]

Alpha, Beta, . . .

Guess where our word "alphabet" comes from.
Kate Smith Sings...

No date, but I'm guessing sometime after the war, late 1940's or so.
UPDATE Note, however, that the displayed flag has 50 stars, and remember that Hawaii, the 50th State, was admitted in 1959.
UPDATE II I just knew that someone knows a lot more than I. Go to

I'll just let this link speak for its beautiful self. It, and many others, can be found on Google at their collection of NASA shots here.

The Sigma Phi House in Madison WI

Ann Althouse is a blogger and a law professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She lives in University Heights and recently toured the Sigma Phi house across the street from my grandparents house where I vacationed when I was a kid.

Her perceptive camera was put to good use and the results can be seen on Flickr

Please take a gander. This place is truly an architectural masterpiece; it's amazing that it has survived so well.

Summer Solstice

This is it! First day of summer! Longest daylight of the year! Here in Nut Crik we are at latitude 37.91N, and our daylight hours total 14:48. Bromsgrove is at 52.15N, so their daylight is longer.
(Do we start the time when the tip of the sun appears on the horizon, or wait until the entire orb is visible? Nuance, my friend, and of no real importance if you are consistent. Oh well. . .)

USA 1 - 1 ITALY

Well, at least that's better than one of the alternatives (although the grass was a bit bloody after the game.) For a explanation of soccer, an appealing explanation I guess, please see this extract of a WSJ article that I found at Power Line. Henry Kissinger (you remember him, right?) explains all.
Gotta go now. A's game starts in a few minutes.

Study Shows Pizza May Help Fend Off Cancer
06-12-2006 -- www.theinquirer.net

According to an article from Theinquirer.net, “People might rejoice to hear that pizza keeps you fit.”

The article said, “Researchers from Italy say they have found that diet of regular pizza can help fend off cancer.”

The report stated that: “The study suggests that tomatoes and olive oil found in pizza are the sort of active ingredients that help to fight cancer. But boffins are hesitant to extend the healthy label to soggy, doughy concoctions.”

The Number Of The Beast!

"This calls for wisdom: let him who has understanding reckon the number of the beast, for it is a human number, its number is six hundred and sixty-six."

If (and only if) you are into numbers, please see this.

I particularly enjoy the last comment regarding the sum of the squares of the first seven primes. Whew, that's obscure!

Rhododendron

Our favorite radio gardener has for many years been Bob Tanem on KSFO every Sunday morning. His world-famous "Garden Recipe" solutions can be found here.
The problem is that Tanem doesn't like rhododendrons. He says that they're pretty unattractive for 47 weeks a year, and then bloom for only 5 weeks before reverting to their unattractiveness. How can he say that this is not worth it:
